Planning a Deck

Decks are quickly becoming a necessity in today's home market. Quite often, the added outdoor living space can help you either sell a house, or hold the social event of the year. With the advent of such things as outdoor living rooms and outdoor kitchens, it is readily apparent that this trend to migrate outside is only going to increase.

In order to make your dream a reality when you are planning a deck, use some simple steps. It won't matter if you are trying to update a deck that is badly needs it, or you are contemplating a completely new addition to your house, the steps are the same.

• Location. First of all, before you decide what to build, you need to decide where to build. Location is going to play a large role in the final cost of your project, as well as have an impact on the cost of your home.
• Size. How large of a deck do you want to have? There are some homes that have a deck so large that it rivals the floor space of the home. Consider, and plan accordingly, what size is going to work best for you and your family.
• Design. Do you want a single story deck to go with your three story home? Or would you rather have a multi level deck that touches on all the home's levels? How about a design that has multiple entertainment areas, or areas that are dedicated to cooking, entertaining and maybe play? Whatever your final decision, draw out a rough idea that can serve as the basis for blue prints later on.
• Materials. Take a look at the different types of building materials that are available. Consider what you are capable of spending initially, as well as what you are apt to spend in time and money for upkeep. Write down your options.
• Build. Decide if you are going to build you deck yourself, or if you are going to have a contractor do it for you. There is no right or wrong decision on this one, as there are positive and negative aspects of each. Just use your notes from the previous steps to help you reach your decision.
