Garage Organization

Summary: Garages seem to be continually running out of space. Garage organization can help you to maximize your available space while also helping to keep this over used room clean. Here's how you can do it.

There is little doubt that the garage is one of the most heavily utilized rooms in the home. Typically, this room is the gathering point for basically everything that doesn't belong in another room, and many times for things that do. As the unofficially official home storage unit, garage organizational space can come at a premium. As long as you have some basic guidelines garage organization does not have to be a very painful or drawn out process. In fact, with the proper attitude firmly in place you can have a whole lot of fun while making your garage an organizational paradise.

  • Plan. The first thing that you are going to need to do is create a plan. I have found that when I am trying to organize a large area like a garage a map comes in really handy. A simply drawn map, where you can have illustrate what your desired outcome is supposed to be. This doesn't have to be to scale, though it does help. Simply assign a section of your garage to each of the various uses. Some of the uses that you might have in mind are such things as gardening, automotive, storage, and sports. Decide which types of storage units are going to best suit the needs of each section.
  • Clean. Once you have planned out what you are going to do, it is time to clean. Yes, you are going to need to clean everything out of your garage. All that you need to do is simply remove all of the items in your garage to the outside. As you are doing this, you can sort through all of the stuff, and start to organize it. Do this by separating it into various piles based upon the uses you have in mind. While you are doing this, you should also use the time to get rid of anything that you no longer need. Either throw it away, or donate it to a worthy cause. I would personally suggest donating.
  • Storage. After you have cleaned out the garage, you are ready to start bringing in the storage units you have decided upon. Take the time to organize and maximize the space available. Quite often, the best organized garages utilize more than one type of storage system.
  • Implement. Finally, after you have put in your storage and organizational systems it is time to implement them. Simply having things separated into different areas is going to help, but is not going to be the final solution. You need to continually keep that system up, or you are going to find yourself right back into the chaotic mess you just left.
