Storage Furniture

Summary: Regardless of whether you live in a loft, or a mansion chances are good that you can use some more space. Storage furniture is a great way to increase organizational space within your home. Here is a brief rundown on some of the different styles of storage furniture.

Space is one of the most precious commodities around the home. It doesn't matter if you are living in a one bedroom apartment, or 4 bedroom house storage space can quickly become an item that you don't have enough of. With this truth in mind, over the past several years many furniture and home decorating companies have started to design new styles of furniture that I like to call "storage furniture." One example of such a company is IKEA, where just about everything that they sell is designed for small or limited space, and with multiple uses in mind. Here is a brief description of some of the more common items that you can find in most furniture stores that you can turn into your own type of storage furniture.

  • Bookcases. One of the greatest examples of furniture that can pull double duty is the bookcase. This great piece of furniture can be used to store just about everything under the sun from books, to knick-knacks to clothing. When using such a piece furniture, the biggest thing that someone needs to do is just use a little imagination.
  • Sideboards. Sideboards (more commonly known as buffets) are more typically seen in the dinning room. However, these items can be used in places other than just the dinning room. These items are useful for storing more than china and other dinning ware; these would be perfect for storing such things as blankets and board games.
  • Chairs. More and more often, you are able to find chairs that have built in storage compartments. Depending on the style you decide to go with, you can use these chairs in the dinning room, kitchen or even the living room.
  • Benches. Some of the more interesting types of furniture that I have found are along the lines of benches. I have usually found these pieces of furniture in stores that cater to individuals that have a taste for the southwest, or that desire the look of the Pennsylvania Dutch. If you utilize these benches in hallways then they are great for storing blankets and out of season coats.
  • Ottomans. Recently there has been a fairly new innovation in home storage design. That innovation was in turning ottomans into something like an oversized chest. While it is possible to use a real chest as an ottoman, why not use something that is actually designed for your feet to go on that you have the added bonus of being able store just about everything in. These units are absolutely wonderful for storing games and game systems.
