Country Home Decorating

Summary: Country home decorating is not necessarily about country music (though many people are inspired by it). Instead to many people, country home decorating is about feeling like they are in a more secure time. The guidelines for decorating in this style are pretty easy to follow, and here they are.

Thanks in large part to the rise in popularity of country music there has been, not very surprisingly, a corresponding rise in the popularity of all things country. This popularity ranges from the country "look" in clothes to country home decorating. While it is possible to decorate your own home to suite your tastes, many people do not know how to properly do so. Quite often people achieve the look that they want because of simple luck, rather than because of their understanding of the general decorating guidelines.

Below is an explanation of those guidelines, with a bit of a country twist. Use these guidelines to help decorate your home the way that you want it, and you are never going to be embarrassed with the look of your home.

  • Color. One of the biggest and most important elements that you need to be aware of when decorating in the country style is color. Many might think that you have to go with muted, faded or even slightly pastel colors all the time. In all actuality though, it doesn't matter what type of color you use, as long as you are consistent in how you use the color. The one thing that you do not want to end up with, when you are doing the country look is to have what looks like a patchwork quilt for a living room. That is, of course, unless you are actually using a patchwork quilt for decorating your living room. If that is the case, just be consistent in its use.
  • Balance. Most country homes are all about balance. Balance is pretty much about flow, and you want there to be a flow to everything. Take the time to plan out everything, arrange the furniture so that there is not a cluttered claustrophobic mess.
  • Material. In country decorating, the materials tend to play a large role. In country decorating you are going to want to use as many natural materials as possible. This means that you should stick with wood furniture and accessories. Not only that, but you should also stick with decorations and other things that look like they would belong in an old farm house, if possible try using antiques. Typically, when you are looking at designing your home in a country style, antiques (or those items that look like antiques) help set the tone for what you want.
