Choosing Bathroom Light Fixtures

Summary: For some reason, the bathroom tends to be one of the most overlooked rooms in the home when it comes to interior decorating. If you are looking for a way to dramatically improve the look of your bathroom, then one of the simplest ways is install new bathroom light fixtures. Here are some great guidelines you can use when choosing those fixtures.

Choosing great bathroom light fixtures can be a tad confusing for anyone who is not a professional interior decorator. Luckily, it doesn't have to be that way anymore. If you ever wanted some outstanding bathroom light fixtures, but didn't know where to begin when looking for them, then your help is here. Use these guidelines when you begin choosing bathroom light fixtures for your new bathroom.

  • Light level. When looking at the light fixtures that you may want, you need to consider the light level you want for your bathroom. Do you like your room to be bright or one that is a little darker? Without even putting in a dimmer switch, the type of light fixture that you choose will greatly affect the amount of light you have in a particular room. Compare the styles and choose several styles that you may like.
  • Location. Where in your bathroom will you be having the light fixtures? Typically, light fixtures should be placed so that you can illuminate the room, while also being able to illuminate your face so that you can better see what you are doing when you are shaving or putting on makeup. Either way, where you plan on putting your light fixtures will also have an impact on what kind of light fixtures you can even have.
  • Style. When choosing your light fixtures, try to focus on how they will interact with the style of your bathroom. You want something that will be an extension of the room's style, rather than something that will conflict with it. The goal is to have your light fixtures be so inconspicuous, and blend with the room so naturally, that you don't even notice them unless you are looking right at them.
  • Can you install it? Are you planning on having a professional come and install your new light fixtures? If not, then you need to make sure that ones that you like are all models that you will be able to install yourself. For the most part, light fixtures are fairly easy to install, as long as you are careful. However, it is highly recommended that you leave more extensive electrical work (beyond simple fixture installation) to the professionals.
  • Can you maintain it? Just like anything else that you purchase, you will need to maintain your new possession. Is the new light fixture something that you will be able to take care of through casual everyday maintenance? Does the new light fixture require major work on your part to even change a light bulb? Keep in mind that even if something looks nice and pretty you are the one that is going to need to change the light bulb eventually.
