Becoming More Energy Self Sufficient

Summary: In today's economy, who doesn't want to have a little extra money lying around? One of the best ways that you can do that, is by becoming more energy self sufficient. Here's how.

Anyone who is interested in saving as much money as possible in today's economy should look into becoming more energy self sufficient. One of the fastest rising costs of living today is energy, and during the high usage months this cost only seems to sky rocket. Here are some simple methods that you can use to help you become a little more energy self sufficient.

  • What you use. First of all, you need to determine what your energy usage is. The best (and most accurate) method for doing this would be to add up your past year's worth of energy bills. Add up each month, and then divide by twelve to get the average amount of energy you use each month. If you don't have your bills for the last year, you can use your last months bill as a very rough estimate. Simply by knowing what you pay, you will be able to come up with other methods to help cut your costs.
  • Wind. One of the better ways to help generate a little extra electricity around your home would be through the use of wind generators. This method will only really work in areas that are usually, and regularly windy, and should always be installed by a professional.
  • Solar. Solar energy is one of the most reliable methods for becoming energy self sufficient. By properly having solar panels installed and positioned, you can dramatically reduce your energy bill. In fact, many people have been able to reduce their electricity bill alone by at least 1/3 through this method.
  • Appliances. When purchasing your appliances, make sure that you purchase the appliances that have been awarded the energy star rating. These appliances have been specifically tested, designed, and proven to use less energy than other similar appliances. In addition, many times you can get a small rebate, or even a discount from your local electric company through the use of these appliances.
  • Lights. While they are expensive, Compact Florescent Light bulbs (CFLs) area great way to reduce your energy consumption. These light bulbs have been shown to use roughly 75% less electricity then normal light bulbs and have a longer service life. However, be careful if you break them, since special methods need to be use to clean up the mess.

While none of these methods will guarantee, by themselves, a lower energy bill or allow you to be come totally self sufficient it is a great way to start. Keep in mind that energy self sufficiency is a long (and often expensive) road so start small. Start with the lights and the appliances, and then go on from there as you can afford more and more. One thing that must be remembered though, is to always turn off your lights, and appliances when you are not using them anymore.
