Garage Organization Systems

Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated January 13, 2017)

Garage organization systems are supposed to help you keep your garage neat and clean, with everything in its own place. This way you can find everything that you need as quickly as possible, without getting frustrated. Another added bonus of having an organization system in your garage is that you will be able to better store everything in your garage and run a lower risk of damaging any of your tools, holiday decorations, or even old memorabilia that you keep out there.

For many people picking the garage organization system that a person should use can often be more frustrating, annoying, or even overwhelming than actually installing the system itself. To that end, here are a few guidelines that you can use to help you decide and determine which garage organization system you should use.

  • Know your needs. Before you can decide on an organization system for your garage, you need to determine what your needs are. This means that you need to figure out how much space you have to work with, what you have stored in your garage, and even what you plan on using your garage for. After you have determined these things, you will have a better idea what your total needs are.
  • Picture the end result. Once you have determined what your needs are, you need to imagine what you want your garage to look like. Do you want your garage to look like a storage unit? Perhaps you would like your garage to look more like a professional mechanics? Do you want your garage to be a home improvement workshop? You will not be able to properly organize your garage without knowing what you plan on using that space for. Envision what your goal is, and then work on a way to make it a reality.
  • Decide on a style. There are several different styles of organization systems that you can use. Some are as simple as peg boards hanging on the wall, while others can be as intricate as having a "locker" system where everything has its own space and unit. The best way to decide which will work for your needs is to take some time and a look at a few. This would mean going to your local home improvement store and taking a look at what is available. Try a few out while there, and see if there are any that you like.
  • Be creative. Don't lock yourself into using only one type of organization system. It's rare that a single organization system will fit every aspect and task that you need filled. Use some imagination, and mix and match different portions of the available organization systems until you have every aspect of what you are looking for fulfilled.
