Despite what many people may think, decorating a deck is just like decorating any other room in your home. This should remove much of the anxiety that you may be feeling at the prospect of doing any decorating. In fact, as long as you keep in mind that you are simply decorating another room in your home, then all you need to do is follow these simple guidelines in order to get the perfect look for your deck or patio.
- How much space do you have to work with? Often the biggest difficulty that anyone has with decorating a deck is they don't stop to consider how much room they have to work with. This is actually understandable since there are no walls to help set up the boundaries. When looking at your deck, try to visualize walls where the railings, or edges of the patio are. The area that you have left is the "room" that you need to decorate.
- Decide on a theme for your deck. Think of a theme that you would like for your deck, and use that to guide the overall decorating scheme that you will be using. Some examples that you could use are setting up your deck as an out door bistro, or pub, or even as another rec center that your family can have fun in. Use your imagination, and keep in mind that this is your home, and as such it should be a reflection of yours and your family's personality.
- Get furnishings that go with your theme. After having decided on a theme, start purchasing furnishings that will go along with that theme. Keep in mind as you are doing this that you want to have the furnishings compliment the look of your home as well. There should be a sense of flow and extension from the rest of the home that goes with the deck. The idea is to have the deck feel like another room of your home after all.
- Try it out, but trust your instincts. As you are placing the furniture, and arranging the accessories, do not be afraid to try out different arrangements, since that is the only way that you can really find what will work for you. However, keep in mind that you need to trust your instincts. If that patio furniture set simply doesn't feel right in the center of the deck, then try placing it somewhere else.
