Makeover Your Furniture

Written by Karen Bates (last updated September 21, 2020)

Many people like to change the look of their home's interior once in a while. After keeping things the same for months or years, a little change in how your home looks can be a breath of fresh air for decorating that seems stale and boring.

Of course, we don't all have the money or time to make big changes to our homes whenever we feel like it. Buying new furniture, re-carpeting a room, painting the walls, or completely remodeling an area is simply not always feasible, especially for those on a budget. Although it can be fun to completely redecorate a room, it's not something that most people can afford to do very often.

But what if you're tired of the way a room looks but can't do a lot of redecorating? Changing the look of your furniture is a great way to get a fresh look, but purchasing an entirely new set is expensive. Instead, you can save money and try something new by giving your current furniture a makeover.

One way that you can transform furniture is with paint. If you have wicker or wooden chairs and tables in a room, you can change them with a quick coat of paint. You can really personalize your furniture by painting it however you wish, and a change of color adds a new look to the room.

Another option is reupholstering. This can be a little more complicated, but it can be done quite inexpensively compared to buying new furniture. You will need to choose new fabric for your chair, then find a tutorial to guide you through the process depending on the kind of chair you are reupholstering. It can take a little time and patience, but the results can look amazing!

One of the most ridiculously simple ways to change the look of your furniture is with slipcovers. You can buy or make slipcovers, and in most cases they slip right over a chair or sofa to drastically change the look of a room. Slipcovers come in various shapes, sizes, fabrics, patterns, and textures, so you are certain to get just what you are looking for without much hassle. Another option is to get a large throw blanket to drape over your furniture to alter its appearance.

Making a change to the look of a room can be as easy as giving your current furniture a good cleaning. Hire a professional upholstery cleaner to steam old dirt and stains out of fabrics, leaving your furniture looking bright and brand new.
