Stylish Homemade Shades

Written by Karen Bates (last updated September 8, 2021)

There are many ways that you can make your home look and feel uniquely yours. Of course, one of the best ways to achieve this is to use decorations that help illustrate your personality. Furniture, pictures on the wall, paint colors, fabric patterns, and other details can really bring out the beauty and individuality of your home.

Like any other decorative aspect of your house, your window treatments can impact the overall atmosphere of an area. Curtains, blinds, and window shades can give your windows a particular look while offering you privacy and the ability to limit the amount of light that enters your home.

When it comes to window shades, there are many kinds that you can buy, or, in some cases, make. There are several popular styles, such as Roman, woven, roller, fabric, pleated, and sheer. The kind you choose can help you achieve a certain look in an area of your home.

Shades, unlike blinds, tend to often be made out of fabric. Some shades are made up of other materials like wood or bamboo. Because shades can be created using fabric, choosing to make this kind of window treatment gives you a huge selection when it comes to patterns and colors. Plus, making a fabric shade, such as the stylish and popular Roman shade, means that it can be homemade to suit your exact preferences.

If you are interested in making your own Roman shades, you will need to record measurements of the windows that you want to cover so you will know how much fabric to get. Next, you can start thinking about what type of fabric to use for your project. You should consider carefully, since the material you select can make a difference in the functionality of the shades. For instance, heavy opaque material will be the most effective at keeping sunlight out of a room, but sheer fabrics add a delicate and beautiful touch.

Take patterns and colors into consideration. To get a bold and stylish look, use trendy and deep colors that compliment the color scheme of the room. Thick bars of color on your shades will definitely make a strong statement, as will fun shapes or geometric patterns. Of course, a floral pattern is also a classic look that you might prefer over a more modern and trendy appearance.

Making shades yourself gives you the option of choosing your own colors, patterns, and material to get the perfect look for your home. Plus, by taking on this project yourself, you might just save some money over buying pre-made window treatments.
