Remodeling Bathrooms

Written by Karen Bates (last updated February 28, 2022)

When a home is first built, everything seems to be up-to-date and working great. But after people have been living in the house for a few years, things change. Over time, the fixtures, paint, floor coverings, and other aspects of the home may begin to look old and out-dated. Even if the area is still perfectly functional, it may not look new anymore. This situation may call for a remodel.

Remodeling is a great way to update the look of your home without moving into a brand new place. Remodeling can be simple and, in some cases, may be fairly low-cost, especially compared to moving out and buying a new place. Plus, remodeling allows you to customize exactly how the room will look, from the colors used to the overall decorating style. When remodeling, you might choose to change a few aspects of the room, or completely re-do everything.

One room that can become outdated is the bathroom. Everything from the tile and flooring to the fixtures and cabinets can begin to look worn-out and out of date over time. When this happens, it may be time for a remodel in the bathroom. To change the appearance of this room, you can invest less than $100 or thousands: it's all up to you and what you want to do.

Before you start, assess the area and decide what you want to change as well as what will stay. How does the floor look? What about the wallpaper or paint on the walls? And do you still like the way the toilet, sink, and faucets look? List everything that will stay and go. Then, begin researching your options to find out how much the project will cost overall.

Certain areas in the bathroom tend to need replacing more often than others. One job to consider is changing the walls. Whether you have paint or wallpaper, you may find that you want a fresh look. Wallpaper tends to look dated faster, so for a more long-term change, go with a nice coat of paint.

An easy and fairly inexpensive way to update is replacing the faucets. The faucets in the tub and sink can become worn-looking, and installing something new can add interest to the room. In some situations, you may even want or need to replace the whole tub, shower, or sink with something new, like upgrading to a jetted tub, or a larger sink.

Other things you may consider updating in your remodel include the toilet, flooring, cabinets, mirror, medicine cabinet, and shelving. Even changing just one of these can make a huge difference to the appearance of the bathroom.

Remodeling the bathroom can give new life and a great look to an outdated room. If you are tired of the same old look, consider renovating.
