Choosing Perfect Holiday Decorations
Written by Lee Wyatt (last updated June 25, 2012)
It doesn't matter if you are looking for those perfect Christmas tree decorations or some outstanding window dressings for Halloween—you want your home to reflect you and your feelings of the holidays. However, as everyone knows, when it comes to choosing perfect holiday decorations everyone has their own definition. The real question, though, is not what are the perfect decorations, but more accurately how to choose the perfect holiday decorations for you.
As is usually the case with most things related to decorating or fashion, everyone's taste is going to be different. What this means is that no one can actually say (with any degree of accuracy) what is beautiful and what is not. This also means there are guidelines that anyone can use to help them in choosing perfect holiday decorations (regardless of the holiday).
- Theme. Often the best decorations are those that have a theme, and many times this theme can be the holiday itself. An example of this would be Halloween, with its spooky flavor. However, when you begin looking at Christmas tree ornaments there could be virtually no end to the themes you could use. Some possible examples of themes would be sci-fi (little spaceships), animated movies (like Disney characters and so on), or homemade.
- Color. When choosing decorations that you would like to use for your holiday festivities, you should keep in mind color. Color helps to set the mood for the holidays. There are some almost cliche colors such black and orange for Halloween, browns, reds, and oranges for Thanksgiving, and reds, greens, blue, gold, and silver Christmas that everyone seems to know. However, just about any color combination can work for your holiday decoration needs, as long as you remember one thing: these colors need to be a reflection of your personality.
- Balance. When decorating a Christmas tree, a table, or your front window you need to remember to balance everything. A wise person once said "moderation in all things," and when using decorations this is still important. Decorations are designed to help enhance the beauty and ambiance of your home during the holidays, not detract or distract by creating a cluttered feel to the home.
- Consistency. It is not going to matter what your colors are, what your theme is, or even if you are balancing everything if you are not consistent. Consistency is an important part of any type of decorating endeavor, and using holiday decorations is no different. What this means is that you need to keep your use of color, theme, and even balance the same throughout the entire area of the home you are decorating. Strive for a sense of natural progression or flow when going from one room to another.
